WHITRIDGE (HENRY), bookseller in London, (1) under the Royal Exchange; (2) corner of Castle Alley near the Royal Exchange, 1727–55. Dealer in law books. The second address, which probably refers to the same place as the first, is given in the imprint to The Elogium of ... Peter I, Czar of Moscovy, a pamphlet of forty-six pages. He is mentioned in the will of Samuel Birt, who died in 1755. [P.C.C. 304, Paul.]
Notes & Queries "London Booksellers Series" (1931–2)
WHITRIDGE, H. The earliest reference I have found to this bookseller is in 1727, when he was at the corner of Castle Alley in Cornhill. In 1730 he gives his address as "Near the Royal Exchange," but this does not necessarily refer to new premises, for any shop on Cornhill might reasonably be described as near the Royal Exchange. At this date he was publishing the Daily Journal in conjunction with N. Blandford. He was still in business in 1750.
