The preface contains a discussion of the use of rhyme in dramatic verse, which occasioned Dryden's Essay of dramatick poesie. Howard replied in the preface to The great favourite, or, The Duke of Lerma
"The surprisal", "The committee", "The Indian Queen" "The Vestal Virgin" and "The great favourite, or the Duke of Lerma" each has separate title page, with imprint "printed for Henry Herringman, and are to be sold by R. Bentley, J. Tonson, F. Saunders, and T. Bennet. MDCXCII."; pagination and register are continuous
