According to K.A. Coleridge, p. 274, "Jacob Tonson issued two collections in 1695, parts of which are in large part the same, but with different arrangements". The first collection (the work being catalogued here) contains a general title page (which the second collection lacks), "Paradise lost", a list of subscribers (cf. Shawcross, 381), "A table" (index to "Paradise lost"), "Paradise regain'd", "Samson Agonistes", "Poems upon several occasions", and Hume's "Annotations", usually (but not always) in that order. The first collection of the Poetical works may have been devised partly as a means of clearing unsold copies of the 1688 editions of "Paradise lost", "Paradise regain'd", and "Samson Agonistes", since sets often contain the 1688 printing of these works.
