- Smectymnuus is a pseudonymn composed of the initials of the authors who used it, viz. Stephen Marshall, Edmund Calamy, Thomas Young, Matthew Newcomen, and William Spurstowe.

A reissue of the 1642 editions of "An apology against a pamphlet call'd A modest confutation of the Animadversions upon the remonstrant against Smectymnuus" (Wing M2000) and of "The reason of church-governement urg'd against prelaty" (Wing M2175), with a cancel general title page replacing the title page for the "Apology"; the original title page for "The reason of church-governement" is retained. Although the latter title page is dated 1641, it was actually published in January or February of 1642. Cf. K.A. Coleridge, Catalogue of the Milton collection in the Turnbul Library.
