In two parts, each with separate dated title page, pagination, and register. Part 1, with title mirroring title on first 9 lines of general title page, is a translation of Ren'e Rapin's "Le comparaison de Platon et d'Aristote" with an imprint identical to that on the general title page. Part 2, "Judgment on Alexander and Caesar; and also on Seneca, Plutarch, and Petronius" is by Saint-Evremond, has imprint, "London, printed by A. Maxwell, for Jonathan Edwin at the sign of the three Roses in Ludgate-street, 1672". This work is translated by John Dancer, who signs the dedication; French original not traced
Leaves P4 and ]2E8 are blank; leaf ]2A1 bears a license to print on verso
Each part was also issued separately. Since the short title of Rapin's work when issued separately and the short title of the general title page are identical, both issues are assigned the same Wing number, R260. Part 2 as a separate issue is assigned Wing S303A.
- Uncontrolled note
- Verify whether first leaf is blank. General t.p. may be a singleton, but could also be a bifolium with title printed on recto of second leaf
