Originally in six parts, parts 1-4 have in each part two volumes, part 5 is in four volumes and part 6 is a single volume; another volume was then added to the series.
Part 1, entitled 'The general magazine of arts and sciences' with its imprint dated 1755, contains 'The young gentleman and lady's philosophy', the first volume dated 1759 and the second 1763; part 2, 'The natural history of England', has its two volumes similarly dated; part 3, 'A new and comprehensive system of.
philology', has its first volume (which includes at its end 'Directions to the book-binder', listing the parts) dated 1759 and the second 1764; part 4, 'A new and comprehensive system of mathematical institutions', has its two volumes similarly dated; part 5, 'Miscellaneous correspondence', has its first two volumes dated 1759 and the last two 1764; part 6, 'Biographia philosophica', is itself dated 1764; and the final volume, added to the series, 'The general magazine of arts and science', is dated 1764.
